Scripture: [Proverbs 16:18-19].
18 Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.
19 Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.
BELOVED, HEAR THIS
In our devotional three days ago, I shared insights on what elevation truly means. I defined it as God’s sovereign process of lifting individuals to higher levels of purpose, influence, and impact. However, various barriers can hinder this process. One of them is:
1. Pride and Self-Reliance:
Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall. (Proverbs 16:18)
Pride and self-reliance block divine elevation by, ignoring God’s sovereignty, relying on human strength, resisting correction and feedback.
When you begin to have a sense of self-importance, arrogance, or superiority, it’s an indication that pride has set in. This can lead to destruction according to Proverbs16:18.
Effects:
1: Separates one from God
2: Hinders humility and teachability
3: Fosters self-reliance
4: Leads to downfall
Here are some symptoms of pride:
1: Arrogant attitude
2: Boastful speech
3: Resistance to correction
4: Lack of accountability
How to overcome pride:
1: Recognize and confess pride
2: Cultivate humility (Philippians 2:3-5)
3: Seek feedback and correction
4Depend on God’s strength (Proverbs 28:26)
